Medical research enjoys a very long and traditional history in Tirol. A medical faculty – the first in the Alpine region – was established at the University of Innsbruck as early as the 17th century.
Today, the Medical University of Innsbruck is known primarily for its work in the fields of transplant medicine, life sciences and neurosciences.

In addition to the renowned medical university hospital, there are also other universities of applied sciences dedicated to the health professions and medical research, such as UMIT (private health education university in Hall) or the Training Centre West for Health Professions in Innsbruck.
