Tirol - where alpine sport was born

With its magnificent mountains and central location in the heart of the Alps, Tirol is the home of alpine sports.

It is not only winter sports such as alpine skiing that are enjoyed to the highest standards in Tirol. Nordic sports, for instance, cross-country skiing and biathlon, as well as climbing enthusiasts, cycling fans and runners also find perfect conditions in Tirol.

Especially in recent years, there has been a boom in niche sports such as trail running, ski touring and ski mountaineering. As the province is host to numerous stages of various races, Tirol has gained popularity with race competitors, impressing with its magnificent conditions, unique natural landscapes and high degree of professionalism.

The numerous opportunities for alpine sports also require an extraordinarily high level of scientific and economic competence, which is manifested in the branches of many alpine institutions and sports goods manufacturers operating nationwide.

Leader in alpine technology

Since the early 1980s, Tirol has been at the epicentre of technical developments in artificial snowmaking systems, which can be tested directly on site due to its central location in the Alps. This location attracts prestigious manufacturers of snow-making equipment, as well as pump and pipe systems to Tirol.

At Tirol Snow Centre (Schneezentrum Tirol), cable car operators, companies and research institutions collaborate to develop innovative products, services and processes with which the efficiency of snow production and slope management can be improved, while reducing the use of resources at the same time.

State-of-the-art technology + minimum resources = eco-conscious alpine sports

Tirol is also at the cutting edge of sports equipment production with tradition and innovation: Kathrein Toboggans, Gasser Toboggans, Spade Kayaks, Kohla, Stubai Sports, SPuRart and many more.

Tirol as a sports science and sports medicine centre

Tirol has four different scientific institutions that conduct teaching and research in the field of sports: Institute for Sports Science at the University of Innsbruck, Institute for Sports, Alpine Medicine and Health Tourism at UMIT Hall, Management Center Innsbruck and the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein. Furthermore, these scientific institutions include research centres with an alpine focus.
In addition to public hospitals, numerous private institutions such as Kursana Private Clinic, Medalp Sportclinic, Sanatorium Kettenbrücke and the Gelenkpunkt group practice have specialised in sports medicine care based in Tirol.

Collaborations are entered into between the teaching and clinical institutions at varying levels.

These organisations promote the exchange of scientific and sports medicine data by hosting numerous congresses and symposia.
